A cone shell (Conus hendersoni)

Age: 6.5 - 5.3 million years old

Period: Latest Miocene

Field notes: Length – 60 mm. From near Te Araroa, East Cape, North Island, New Zealand. Fossils like this cone shell indicate the Miocene climate in the New Zealand area was much warmer than it is today, almost (but not quite) tropical!
