Trilobite Limestone

Age: 505 million years old

Period: Middle Cambrian

Field notes: A limestone made up of broken pieces of Trilobite skeletons. The largest piece of trilobite skeleton in this sample is about 20 mm wide. From Trilobite Rock, Cobb Valley, Northwest Nelson, South Island, New Zealand. Trilobites were Slater-like marine animals and the first group of animals which had eyes. They were an ancient group of Arthropods which died out before the Dinosaurs ruled the earth. Arthropods are an enormous group of animals which all have a external skeleton and jointed legs. Crabs, insects and spiders are Arthropods.
