A Cowrie shell (Cypraea (Notadusta) sp.)

Period: Latest Miocene

Field notes: Also spelt Cowry. Length – 42 mm. From near Te Araroa, East Cape, North Island, New Zealand. Fossils like this cone shell indicate the Miocene climate in the New Zealand area was much warmer than it is today, almost but not quite tropical!
