Kossmatia mairiensis, an ammonite

Age: 153-148 million years old

Period: Late Jurassic

Field notes: Maximum diameter 90 mm. From the south shore of Kawhia Harbour, North Island, New Zealand. Ammonite fossils are often found in concretions like this one. Carefully cracking these concretions open sometimes reveals a fossil, but more often than not there is nothing but rock!
