‘Ostrich foot’ shell (Struthiolaria calcar)

Age: 19 - 16 million years old

Period: Early Miocene

Field notes: Length – 50 mm. From Oamaru, South Island, New Zealand. Ostrich Foot shells are a small family of sea snails (Family Struthiolariidae) which lived around the margins of the ancient content of Gondwana. Fossils shells belonging to this family are found in New Zealand, Australia, Southern South America and Antarctica. Today, the few living members of this family are found around the coasts of counties that used to be part of Gondwana (e.g. Australia, New Zealand).
