Captain Cook's First New Zealand Voyage

James Cook’s First Voyage of Discovery to New Zealand took place between 1769- 1770.  During this time Cook and his crew sailed around New Zealand mapping the coastline, describing the soils, plants and animals and developing relationships with the local Maori people.

Interesting Facts

  • A Tahitian chief accompanied Cook to act as an interpreter
  • The youngest crew member, Nicholas Young was 12 years old
  • Cook named New Zealand’s land features after important people and places in England and also after members of his crew
  • Cook's charts from this voyage are so accurate that they are very similar to those made using modern mapping techniques
